Description:
Roll Top Desk: S-roll style, constructed entirely of walnut, circa 1897. Found in second floor of old commercial bldg in Emporia, KS. It has all the original brass handles and lock + key for same. Initials of "JPH 1897" written in pencil found inside & behind cubby holes. Also date of "Mar 1984" found on tambour lock. Original finish!
Pictures show results of three week renovation involving: (1) using existing drawer locking mechanisms as patterns, the broken parts were duplicated (using walnut) to rebuild both sections so that all the drawers lock properly when tambour (sliding section) is closed. (2) tambour removed and old broken cables replaced with new (3) The original wood had shrunk over the last 100+ years. Extensions added to ends of tambour pieces so tambour stayed in grooves when opening and closing. (5) All loose joints re-glued and clamped including drawers as needed. (6) all brass polished. (7) entire desk washed by hand using Murphy's Oil Soap (8) finally entire desk was rubbed with Old English furniture oil and then waxed using Johnson's Paste Wax. Truly a beautiful addition to any home. $3250
